Will the Mercedes-AMG hypercar sell? You bet it will
Mercedes-AMG may not have the same supercar pedigree as the likes of McLaren, Ferrari and Porsche, but it certainly has the tech to make its hypercar a success It all dates back to a date in March 2010, when journalists assembled at a Volkswagen Group night to preview its offerings for the Geneva Motor Show the following day got a whole lot more than they bargained for. After all the heavily trailed products had done their turn on stage, Walter Rohrl appeared on board a prototype of what would become the Porsche 918 Spyder. It was an "I was there" moment. And yet even as we collected our jaws off the floor, none of us knew just how significant this moment would be, for what we could not know was that we were witnessing not merely the birth of a new car, but a new kind of car. This was the dawn of the hypercar and soon more would follow from McLaren and Ferrari with Aston Martin not far behind. But who would have bet it would be Mercedes-Benz that would be next in line? There was always a perception at Merc’s AMG performance wing that the brand would stretch only so far. The SLR was its first modern supercar and took forever to sell. The cheaper SLS fared far better was not a runaway success either, as proved by the fact it’s been replaced by a car that uses the same platform but costs little more than half the price. But things have changed at AMG in the last couple of years, by

Lamborghini Centenario Roadster makes public debut in Paris
The convertible version of the Centenario, which celebrates the 100th birthday of the brand's founder, is now on show in Paris The Lamborghini Centenario Roadster, a convertible version of its Aventador-based Centenario Coupé, has been shown in Paris one month after it was revealed at Monterey Car Week. All 20 models of the limited edition Centenario Roadster have already sold out, at a starting price of £1.73m (€2m plus tax). Both the Roadster and its Coupé sibling, which also sold out ahead of its Geneva motor show reveal in March, have been made to honour the 100th birthday of Ferruccio Lamborghini. The brand’s founder was born on 28th April 1916. The Centenario Roadster, like the Coupé, uses Lamborghini’s naturally aspirated V12 6.5-litre engine with power ramped up to 759bhp – 19bhp more than the Aventador SV. Maximum revs have also increased from 8350rpm to 8600rpm.  Weighing 1570kg – 50kg more than the Coupé iteration – the Roadster has a power-to-weight ratio of 483bhp/ton. The Centenario Roadster completes the 0-62mph sprint in 2.9sec, 0.1sec slower than the Coupé, while a top speed of 217mph is claimed. The car maker says that the Roadster displays a “new design direction for Lamborghini accentuated by clean surfaces and superb reflections as ‘form follows function’ “. Built on a carbonfibre monoc

Volkswagen: electric and combustion-engined cars will co-exist for at least 20 years
Despite growing demand for EVs, Volkswagen believes petrol and diesel cars will sell for at least two more decades Volkswagen will continue to develop petrol and diesel engines long into the future, because it believes demand for combustion engines will continue beyond the 2030s. Speaking on the eve of the Paris motor show, VW CEO Matthias Müller said: “The future is electric. Nevertheless, classic powertrains will continue to play a key role for the next two decades at least.” Müller explained that while Volkswagen was to invest heavily in developing electric models, of which 30 are planned before the year 2025, it is committed to working with petrol and diesel engines. "Regardless of all the new opportunities and possibilities the mobility world of tomorrow opens up for us, we must not neglect our existing technologies and core competences,” he said. Müller made reference to the ongoing Dieselgate scandal, and said that it will have a profound effect on Volkswagen’s path. "It is and will remain an incisive turning point, a pivotal event in our history. We are working with all available resources to get to the roots of this crisis and work our way through all of the issues.” Volkswagen’s push for an electric future is emphasi

Future mobility will bring freedom for design, says Volkswagen
The VW Group's brands will be able to express their individual identities more readily in the future, as electric and autonomous cars open up new possibilities for design The self-driving, electric cars of the future will not hinder car designers, Volkswagen has said, but will instead open up new possibilities for fresh and radical styling. Speaking on the eve of the Paris motor show, where the VW Group also unveiled plans to launch a new mobility sub-brand, the group's head of design, Michael Mauer, said styling will be a "key factor" in deciding which car brands survive in the future. "The mobility world of tomorrow gives us designers entirely new creative possibilities," he said. "Electric drives and autonomous driving remove any obstacles and change design more radically than has been the case in recent decades." Mauer also noted that because some of the defining characteristics of cars - for example, the sound of their engines - are not applicable with EVs, the design of the model becomes more important. While saying that the VW Group could "adopt the role of a bold pioneer going forward", Mauer said that each VW brand needed to focus on its individual identity - something that has been promised as the group realigns itself in the wake of the Dieselgate scandal. "In [the] future, too, it is not fitness for purpose but beauty that decides whether a car commands a top price at auction," said Mauer. "Some brands will forge ahead with design and t

Mercedes-AMG GT C coupe confirmed for production
Mercedes-AMG GT C roadster will influence the GT C coupé AMG boss Tobias Moers confirms arrival of coupé version of the more powerful GT C roadster; it'll likely get the same 547bhp engine A Mercedes-AMG GT C coupé looks set to be launched next year with the 547bhp engine of the GT C roadster. On the eve of the Paris motor show, AMG chief executive Tobias Moers said that the model would follow in the near future. While no technical specifications for the future coupé have been revealed, Moers’s announcement suggests the coupé will run with identical technical specifications to the roadster. Along with its more potent 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, which produces 44bhp more than the AMG GT S, the GT C roadster receives altered gear ratios for its seven-speed Speedshift dual clutch transaxles. The GT C's transaxle also features a higher first and lower seventh gears, as well as a lower final drive than the existing GT Coupé. Also added to the GT C is the active air management system that was first seen on the hardcore GT R. It uses a series of vertical louvres within the grille, which automatically open and close depending on the temperature of the engine to either enhance cooling or smooth airflow. It seems highly likely that the GT C coupé will gain all of this hardware. It will lik

Opinion: What it's like to sit in the new Land Rover Discovery
Land Rover's bold claims about the practicality of its new Discovery are put to the test, by our intrepid 6'3 correspondent So it looks good on the outside, but what’s the new Land Rover Discovery like on the inside? Shortly before its reveal we got the chance to clamber inside ahead of the Paris motor show and give it the once over. The first thing that strikes you is how everything has been turned up several notches from the current car: it’s smarter, better finished and - thanks in no small part to the infotainment upgrades - considerably more modern looking. Get your first look at the new Land Rover Discovery here That command driving position that sets Land Rover apart is present and correct and there’s an undeniable Land Rover look and feel to the cabin, despite the numerous updates. That seating position and the front end dimensions also mean that the view out of the window is great, and it’s no problem knowing where the front corners are. Noticeable, too, are the small, clever touches that separate the cleverest cars from the also-rans - the secret storage area behind the ventilation controls, for instance, and the cavernous storage compartment that can hold four iPads and which is accessed by sliding back the cup holders in the centre console. Historians will delight that the infamous curry hook is back, there to hold up your Friday night takeaway and prevent spillages that will last lon

Opinion: Why the Land Rover Discovery needs to be tough
Land Rover has softened the face of its Discovery 5 to leave room for its hardcore 2019 Defender. Will this harm its image? The promised new Defender, when it comes, had better be good. Land Rover is working hard to create a halo and market space for their icon’s long-awaited successor – and that includes the softening of the Discovery’s face for this fifth-generation model so there’s minimum internal competition in the ‘toughness’ area. More and more over 27 years and four previous incarnations, the Discovery came to be the do-it-all 4x4, the one you chose to cross a bog, tow a horse box or use for a  big-mileage expedition on which four or more people had to be comfortable. Even JLR’s own people chose Discoverys as support vehicles for the tough stuff. For the Discovery 5, the company is continuing to make big claims about versatility and durability. This is the best off-roader they’ve ever made, they insist, and will doubtless have evidence. But the new model doesn’t quite look like it. To my eye, the priority is city style and school runs, as evidenced by the fact that the one version Land Rover is highlighting at launch is the ‘stealth’ edition, with its ‘athletic’ bumpers surely aimed at an urban elite. Toughness has always been associated with Land Rovers, but with the launch of this one, you could argue, it’s far less evident. It may be time for Land Rover to get out of

Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern on the new Discovery
Design director Gerry McGovern The Land Rover Discovery 5 has a drastically different design to its predecessors. Gerry McGovern thinks it'll be the company's best seller The 2017 Land Rover Discovery has been revealed in Britain before it heads to the Paris motor show. We catch up with the man who heads Land Rover's design team, Gerry McGovern, to talk about the Discovery 5's significance. How would you summarise the Discovery 5’s position? “We believe it still has all the practical elements Discoverys are famous for, while doing the job in a way that is more relevant to today and will bring more people to the brand.” How will it dovetail with existing Land Rover models? “Very well, we believe. This is the first time we’ve been given the chance to visualise a whole generation of Land Rovers, rather than doing them disparately.” The company has changed its opinion about what a Discovery should be, right? “True. Discovery 3 was probably the most design-literate version – very product orientated. It won various design awards and had a no-nonsense, utilitarian look and feel. But it polarised opinions, especially in the US. We gave it a friendlier face and a more luxurious interior in the Discovery 4 and that sold like hot cakes.” read more

2017 Land Rover Discovery revealed ahead of Paris
Land Rover's all-new Discovery SUV makes its world debut in England's Warwickshire ahead of the Paris motor show The all-new 2017 Land Rover Discovery is faster, lighter, more economical and cleaner-running than the model it replaces, even though it is bigger inside and out. The fifth-generation model, which has been revealed near Land Rover's Coventry headquarters in Warwickshire and will be shown at the Paris motor show, adopts many styling cues from the influential Discovery Vision concept presented by design boss Gerry McGovern at the 2014 New York motor show. Its sleek and curvaceous lines deliberately ditch the square-jawed toughness of the outgoing Discovery 4 to make way for the first of the new Defender family, promised for 2018-2019. “The new Discovery represents a massive shift in design terms from the current one,” McGovern said. “But I think we’ve managed it without losing the essence of its practicality, capability and versatility.” Much of the Mk5 Discovery’s new-found efficiency flows from the adoption of JLR’s cleaner, own-design 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine, which produces a healthy 369lb ft but emits a modest 171g/km of CO2. The other economy driver is a 480kg reduction in kerb weight compared with the outgoing model. It also helps that the Discovery’s frontal

Mercedes-AMG confirms development of new hypercar
New hybrid hypercar with F1 tech is planned for 2018, as Mercedes-Benz looks to take on the Aston Martin AM-RB 001 Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that it is working on a new mid-engined hypercar, to be launched under the Mercedes-AMG performance brand in 2018. The new model was confirmed by the company's head of research and development, Thomas Weber - who is due to retire at the end of this year - on the eve of the Paris motor show. "I am very excited to officially confirm: our next big thing at AMG is already in the pipeline," said Weber. "We are going to create an AMG performance hybrid featuring our Formula 1 drivetrain technology. Under the lead of AMG, our performance companies will join forces and create the most efficient and, at the same time, the best-performing and most spectacular AMG of all time; some might even call it a hypercar. "But no matter what you call it, it will definitely show how we will take our performance brand into the future with extremely efficient and intelligent drivetrain technology. Of course, there will be no compromises in terms of the emotional appeal of this car." Although the Mercedes-AMG hypercar is conceived to rival the likes of the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder, Mercedes will also be looking to challenge the Aston Martin/Red Bull-developed read more

Volkswagen looks to future with new mobility services brand
New company links with Gett’s taxi hailing service and could introduce an autonomous shuttle service The VW Group will launch a new mobility services brand that will focus on offering autonomous and shared transport services later this year. Volkswagen announced the brand's arrival on the eve of the Paris motor show, where it is also demonstrating its first purpose-built electric model, the ID (pictured). The new brand is the 13th VW Group company. It will work towards the group's Together Strategy 2025, which aims to produce 30 electric cars by 2025. The brand will link with partner Gett and its taxi hailing service, and could see Volkswagen introduce an autonomous shuttle service for urban areas, representing a form of car sharing. Private cars could also run on connected technology developed through the new company, suggesting its services could influence future models. “In the future, many people will no longer own a car,” said VW Group CEO Matthias Müller. “But they can all be a Volkswagen customer in one way or another – because we will service a much broader concept of mobility than is the case today. Volkswagen plans to move away from just selling cars and wants to be a leading mobility service provider by 2025. It targets becoming the market leader in Europe. The new mobility services brand will be launched this November. The name of the company will be revealed to coincide with business opening. read more

PSA wants small tech firms to help it please tomorrow's customers
Ahead of the Paris motor show, the PSA Group is launching a new mobility arm called Free 2 Move - but is it up to the task? When it comes to creating glamour, some phrases in the English language just aren't up to the job.  Take the three words 'mobility service provider'. Nothing could sound more boring, yet we're talking here about something practically every modern car company wants to turn itself into, because the three words describe a business that understands where future success will come from. Which leads to a curly question: how do you invest these words with excitement and anticipation? Answer: you get PSA Group boss Carlos Tavares to utter them and explain their significance in his uniquely persuasive way. Today in a reception at a Peugeot HQ in central Paris, Tavares described his company's ambition to become a mobility service provider using links - both financial and co-operative - with "fresh, talented" specialist companies who had a clear vision of the future. While reacting to their influence, PSA would group its car sharing and transport management activities under a new name, Free 2 Move, and would set about catering in the longer term to much more than just the traditional demands of customers wanting to buy new cars, although these would remain important. The number of people owning cars was going down, Tavares explained, but the number who wanted to use them was expanding. This greater usage meant car production might even go up, not down, as lower car ownership m

2017 BMW X2 teased ahead of Paris motor show debut
BMW X2 concept teaser The BMW X2 concept will influence a production model, set to sell for around £30,000 late next year; it’ll share many parts with the X1 but has a more sporting character A concept for the 2017 BMW X2 will be revealed at the Paris motor show tomorrow, and BMW has released a single teaser image of the SUV onto Twitter. The concept will influence a production model that will go on sale during the latter half of 2017, officials from the German car maker have revealed. So far, only development versions of the X2 have been seen. Sister model to the recently introduced second-generation X1, the X2 will become the sixth SUV model to join the BMW line-up and the second to be based on its highly versatile UKL platform – the same structure that underpins the upcoming second-generation Mini Countryman, which is also planned to get its first public airing at the Paris motor show.  The X2 will rival the Range Rover Evoque, and will be priced from around £30,000. It has been conceived as a sporting alternative to the X1 in much the same way the X4 provides a more dynamic take on the X3 and the X6 acts as a more performance orientated option to the X5. Volkswagen ID concept revealed ahead of Paris motor show
ID concept can eke out as many as 373 miles to one charge with its 168bhp electric motor; it’s confirmed for 2020 production The Volkswagen ID concept has been officially revealed ahead of its debut at the Paris motor show. The all-electric hatchback, confirmed to make production in 2020, is powered by a 168bhp electric motor and is claimed to be capable of travelling between 249 and 373 miles on one charge, depending on the driving circumstances.  The concept features a design that’s completely different to VW’s other models. The low-drag focus of the ID's five-door body is clear with the use of smooth body panels and flat door handles. With no engine to feed, the car doesn't have a front grille and gets a short, steeply angeled bonnet that feeds into a long windscreen. Behind this is a panoramic roof that reaches back into an extended roof spoiler that likely helps to boost aerodynamic efficiency. While Volkswagen hasn't revealed any pictures of the car's interior, four passenger seats with floating headrests can be seen, as can a narrow dashboard and polygon-shaped steering wheel. Volkswagen has confirmed that the concept has an autonomous driving mode that will be offered in production models from 2025, suggesting this steering wheel is only required during manual modes. Is the electric car revolution finally here?
Volkswagen ID concept It’s been a long time coming, but with increased battery range and more mainstream players joining the market, EVs are finally set to make an impact. Back in 2009, I had the opportunity to drive a Nissan Leaf prototype at the brand’s technical facility in Cranfield, before attending the initial launch in 2010 in roundabout central, Milton Keynes. It was the beginning of the electric vehicle revolution, everyone said. Fast forward six years and that step-change hasn’t taken off at the speed that some would have hoped. Instead, it’s been incremental, with the gradual introduction of EVs from manufacturers who have presumably been gauging the pioneers' success, while busily trying to create the architecture and engineering solutions to make their own EVs viable.  Some EV launches have had more of a pronounced impact on EV image than others - namely Tesla and BMW’s i brand. Still, even BMW’s sales have been slow off the mark - although the company claims the new i3 with extended range took double the amount of orders the original i3 did in the first couple of months. EV sales have started to pick up, with a 9.2% increase in the year to date in the UK compared with the same period last year. That equates to 6634 cars. When you think that’s only 336 units in

2017 Land Rover Discovery: does it look different enough?
In the midst of all Land Rover's other SUV models - and some excellent rivals - the new Discovery needs to stand out both in terms of looks and practicality The leaked images of the new Land Rover Discovery confirm what we’ve suspected for some time now: the car has been conceived in the same image as all Land Rover products since the genuinely landmark design moment that delivered the Land Rover LRX, better known to you and me as the Evoque. Most of me is delighted with the outcome. The new Disco appears to be a fine-looking machine, just as the Evoque, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery Sport are all fine-looking machines. But there is a small, maverick part of me that hoped it might look a little different to the others. To me the Discovery is and always has been different. You might perceive it as the meat and two veg of the range, the central pivot point around which all those other Land and Range Rover products revolve, but I’ve always seen it as something else, a Land Rover that places function front and centre, deriving from it an authenticity, honesty and loyalty to Land Rover brand values to which none other than the Defender can also claim. read more

Look beyond the SUVs and EVs for potential sleeper hits of the Paris motor show
High-rise vehicles and electrified cars are all the rage, but car makers aren’t giving up on more traditional market segments just yet As each major motor show looms, I start to wonder whether we’re ever going to reach ‘peak SUV’. Most car manufacturers are rushing to tap into the booming customer desire for high-rise vehicles of all sizes, but not all of them can be winners in terms of sales, can they? At present, though, the appetite for them remains voracious, particularly in the compact SUV segment mined so successfully by the trailblazing Nissan Qashqai and those that have followed. Similarly, any self-respecting manufacturer wouldn’t dream of rocking up at a motor show these days without some form of shiny new electric or hybrid vehicle with which to showcase its ambitious vision for future mobility. Setting SUVs and EVs aside, there’s still life in the more traditional market segments, and this is going to be reflected in some manufacturers’ offerings when the Paris motor show gets underway tomorrow. Look at supercars: the segment only accounts for a fraction of a percentage of the total European car market, so there is an argument that we shouldn’t pay it much heed. However, these are the cars that make the big headlines and attract customer attention by tweaking our emotions and indulging our automotive fantasies; they project dynamic images for the manufacturers who make them (or at least make good ones). So while the significance is small when looked at in light of the whole i

PSA launches next-generation mobility and technology brand
Free 2 Move is PSA’s new brand in charge of car sharing, connected technology, corporate fleet servicing and leasing The PSA Group, parent company of Peugeot, Citroën and DS, has launched a new brand called Free 2 Move, which will be in charge of its mobility and smart services operations. Free 2 Move’s launch is part of PSA’s ‘Push to Pass’ strategy, which pulled the company out of financial difficulties and into profit. The second part of the plan was announced by PSA boss Carlos Tavares earlier this year. The group is discussing its new brand in detail at the Paris motor show.  Read about this year's Paris motor show here Free 2 Move was created after several investments in related firms, such as PSA’s purchase in a stake of Canadian car-sharing company Communauto, partnering with Masternaut, an Anglo-French telematics company that specialises in fleet management, and a €100 million (around £86m) investment in two car rental start-ups, Koolicar and Travelcar. Grégoire Olivier, executive vice president of mobility services for PSA, said at the Free 2 Move launch: "For the PSA Group, mobility means not only making and selling excellent cars, but also offering a full range of mobility solutions. read more

The absent Sergio Marchionne and what it means for the Paris motor show
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles boss Sergio Marchionne has pulled out of appearing at the Paris motor show. Does it signpost something bigger? The debate around whether the modern world needs motor shows is under the spotlight this week in Paris, with Bentley, Ford, Lamborghini, Mazda and Volvo among the big names who would traditionally have pitched up electing to give the whole jamboree a miss. The theory goes that motor shows no longer deliver bang for buck; why fight for airtime for your product with 27 other car makers when you can get more coverage and more eyeballs for a (cheaper) digital reveal away from the melee? Read about this year's Paris motor show here On the eve of Paris, the motor show cause has been delivered another blow - albeit from the head of one of the car making conglomerates that is actually there. Having skipped last year's Frankfurt motor show while he negotiated with the workers' unions in the States, Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, has cried off at the last moment again. No reason has been given, but you'd have thought he'd do everything he can to rock up at an event where almost all of his brands - from Alfa to Fiat to Ferrari to Jeep - have something significant

UK car success under threat from Brexit, says industry
Promising car production statistics hide a longer-term worry for the British car industry post-Brexit, says SMMT boss Mike Hawes Strong British car manufacturing figures are all very well, say UK car manufacturers, but they don’t mean expected challenges posed by Brexit are over. Read more about the promising production figures here Speaking during an event at the Eiffel Tower, where eight new British cars were displayed on the eve of the Paris motor show to underscore the UK’s recent healthy car export performance, the chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Mike Hawes, warned that the success had come entirely during pre-referendum trading, but that the industry could not depend on the same business environment in future. “Recent headlines have suggested that Brexit is no problem,” Hawes told an audience of industry leaders that included Minister for International Trade, Mark Garnier. “Even our own figures - 900,000 cars exported so far this year - paint a picture of a strong and vibrant industry. Read about the UK's registrations in August here “But these results have come about because around £10 billion has been invested in our industry over the past five years. It was a huge help with model development and with R&D.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Peugeot 3008 score top marks in Euro NCAP tests
Euro NCAP awards two more cars its highest safety rating but Thatcham Research says more standard safety kit needs to be offered Euro NCAP has awarded the latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the upcoming Peugeot 3008 with its top, five-star safety rating in its latest round of tests. Both cars scored well in the four areas measured by Euro NCAP - adult, child and pedestrian protection, and safety systems. The E-Class scored marginally higher in the safety systems test because it offers Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as standard. The technology is only optional on the 3008. Despite the E-Class's five-star rating, though, safety group Thatcham Research says more needs to be done to make some of the car's most sophisticated safety systems available as standard. These include its semi-autonomous Drive Pilot function, which is currently part of the £1695 Driving Assistance Plus Pack. Thatcham's director of research, Matthew Avery, said: "The E-Class is head and shoulders above the competition when it comes to advanced safety features. However, we know that the take-up of optional safety features is typically less than 10%, so more needs to be done in terms of standard fitment to make these superb technologies more widely accessible." The company has also highlighted what it calls the 'gulf' in safety standards across the world, pointing out that some of India's newest cars, including the Renault Kwid and Honda Mobil

2016 Mercedes C 350 e Sport review
Petrol-electric C-Class is a surprisingly well-priced alternative to a diesel but not the greatest example of the new ‘PHEV’ breed The Mercedes C 350 e is another reason to weigh up the advantages of plug-in petrol-electric hybrid power over a conventional diesel engine in your next compact executive saloon. Those reasons have been mounting of late. Counting the Volkswagen Passat GTE, Volvo V60 D5 Twin Engine, Audi A3 e-tron Sportback and BMW ‘iPerformance’ 330e, there are now plenty of ways for benefit-in-kind tax-paying drivers to combine premium-brand ownership with a sub-50g/km electrified powertrain and end up in a faster and more efficient company car for a similar monthly outlay to that of a mid-range diesel. This youthful niche of the saloon market is now full of cars priced at considerably less than £40,000 in some cases and might even offer value to a private buyer with the right kind of usage in mind.Like the recently road-tested Passat GTE and unlike the Volvo V60, the C 350 e features an electric motor mounted in line with the combustion engine and upstream of a seven-speed automatic transmission. With only 80bhp of electric power and 6.2kWh of battery storage, the C-Class offers less zero-emission power and range than most of its competitors. That said, the Merc’s relatively healthy 208bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine makes the C 350 e the only four-door PHEV of its kind capable of a sub-six-second 0-62mph time. So exactly what kind of upper-echelon mid-size Benz is this?

Leaked 2017 Renault Zoe details show how the EV arms race is escalating
The new Renault Zoe looks set to have a claimed range of 248 miles on one battery charge, which is a boost to the all-round credibility of electric vehicles In terms of the exterior styling it appears to be a blink-and-you'll-miss-it update, but the secret of the revised Renault Zoe - the first details of which have leaked out ahead of its Paris motor show debut - lies in the new 41KWh battery. If my Dutch translation is sound, that means the new Zoe can deliver a certified 400km (248-mile) range when run through the official NEDC test cycle. That's a significant doubling of the claimed range on offer now, and a signal of how fast the pure electric car battery arms race is winding up on the forecourts, primarily as Renault fights with its Nissan Leaf stablemate for supremacy in the mainstream, while the Tesla Model S and Model X set the standard at the premium end of the market.  The BMW i3, meanwhile, has a claimed range of 195 miles, which equates to a usable ‘real world’ range of around 125 miles.    With more range comes a wider pool of potential buyers, something the growing but niche electric car market needs. And with more customers come more advocates, willing to convince doubters that motoring life u

2017 Renault Zoe details revealed online ahead of Paris show
Information published on manufacturer's Dutch website says refreshed all-electric hatchback will offer a 248-mile range from a new 41kWh battery The 2017 Renault Zoe will have a claimed range of 248 miles according to early details that were accidentally published on Renault's Dutch website last night. That’s an increase of 108 miles over the outgoing car and comes thanks to a new 41kWh battery, up from 22kWh. It means the 2017 Zoe can travel 93 miles further than a Nissan Leaf on one full battery charge, although real world driving ranges can often be less than the claimed figure. According to the Dutch information the top-specification variant of the 2017 car produces a maximum of 89bhp, with a middle specification offering 87bhp and then 76bhp for the entry-level model, meaning a more affordable version of the Zoe looks set to be added to the line-up. There's no confirmation that all of these variants will be offered in the UK. Just one picture was included with the leaked release. It shows a car looking similar to the current Zoe, suggesting the facelift’s most significant updates are beneath the skin. The technical details have since been removed from Renault’s Dutch media site. The 2017 Renault Zoe will make its official debut at the Paris motor show tomorrow

London to gain 400 new EV charge points by the end of 2016
Transport for London has granted Bluepoint London responsibility to maintain and expand the capital's charger network Four hundred new electric vehicle charging points will be added to London’s streets by the end of 2016 following a deal between charger specialist Bluepoint London, Transport for London (TfL) and 16 city boroughs. The deal will give the company responsibility for expanding the capital’s charging point network as well as maintaining and operating charge points in the agreed areas. To help EV drivers find and reserve free charging points, Bluepoint London has developed an interactive map that runs via a smartphone app. Chargers can be booked up to 40 minutes in advance to help prevent queues and maximise each charger’s use. Source London – Bluepoint London's electric charging network operator - will offer a £4 monthly membership fee and pay-as-you go rates of 3.6p per minute for the new charge points. Older charge points will continue to be free to use. Christophe Arnaud, Bluepoint London’s managing director said: “In just over two years we’ve made significant progress to improve the state of the network, remove barriers to facilitate charging and provide easier access to points with more on-street locations in London than ever before.”  Bluepoint London has already invested £30 million into Source London and says it will continue to work closely with London Boroughs and the Mayor’s office to add more charge points across London. “We will maintain a transparent and fair fee structure for all EV users,” added Arnaud. Demand for electric vehicles in Britain has soared in recent months,
