Tesla Autopilot brings autonomous driving to Model S
Elon Musk announces Autopilot in version 7.0 of the Model S's software - and says a fully autonomous vehicle should be ready within three years Tesla is rolling out a new level of autonomous driving on many of its Model S vehicles, as part of the latest update to version 7.0 of the car’s software. The technology, which has been in testing for over a year in most markets where the Model S is sold, will be made available overnight to around 60,000 Model S cars built since last September and fitted with the ultrasonic sensors and forward-facing camera required for the system to work. Called Autopilot, it is designed primarily for motorway use, where it can switch between lanes without any direct steering input from the driver and react to traffic flow.Tesla describes this generation of the software as “a public beta” and says that recognition of traffic lights and Stop signs will only come with the next update of the software. It is also recommending that customers keep their hands on the wheel. The system uses four data sources - ultrasonic sensors right around the vehicle, a forward-facing camera that can read most road signs, forward radar that can see through fog, rain and snow, and what Tesla describes as “high-precision digital maps” that include pooled data on the number of lanes, curvature of the roads and even parking lots, all supplied by existing Model S usage. The move was announced by Tesla boss Elon Musk at a press conference in the United States. He admitted that it was an early version of the technology, but said that Tesla’s connected network of vehicles would allow it to make rapid progress.“We still think of this as a public b

Roewe E50 review
This small electric Chinese supermini is ready to take on competition from Europe Why, you might ask, should you be interested in an electric car that is not and will not be sold in Europe, let alone the UK?The answer is because it is made by Roewe, the luxury car arm of SAIC Motors, which also happens to own MG. Oh, and, to jump the gun a little, because it is really rather good.SAIC’s history hasn’t always promised so much. It purchased the rights to the Rover 75 and Rover 25 after the 2005 collapse of MG Rover, and thus when the first Roewe car was born; called the Roewe 750, it was a reworked 75.The company produced its first electric car in late 2010, a modified version of the Roewe 350. Suffice to say it didn’t set the world alight. This Roewe E50 followed in concept form at the 2012 Beijing motor show, and then entered production at the start of 2013.The Roewe E50 is a city car-sized four seater whose clean lines and unfussy looks inside and out complement the electric drivetrain. It is powered by a 71bhp motor and 18 KWh battery pack. It has a claimed 120-mile range if you drive at a consistent 45mph and a top speed of 81mph.A 30-minute charge from a standard socket delivers a theoretical 90-mile range, while a six-hour charge tops the battery out.The interior is unfussy but practical. Excellent packaging means there is a decent amount of room, even in the back. Two six-footers can comfortably sit one behind the other. On the move, the car delivers an involved and refined drive. Performance is good, the steering feel pleasantly engaging and the balance especially decent for a car with such a short wheelbase. Despite being small and weighing over a tonne, it feels nimble. The ride on the short but surprisingly bumpy test track we sampled it on was well c

Volkswagen Taigun concept review
The Taigun is Volkswagen's answer to the Ford EcoSport, but does it have what it takes to compete in the emerging compact SUV sector? The Volkswagen Taigun concept is a compact four-seater SUV that's set to rival the likes of the Ford EcoSport and Fiat Panda Trekking.Parked up next to the kerb in the sleepy Argentinean town of San Antonio Areco, the Taigun is put into perspective in the very surroundings it can expect to encounter when sales begin in 2016.Concept cars have a tendency to appear out of place away from the spotlights of a motor show, but apart from its vivid blue paint scheme the new entry level Volkswagen SUV looks thoroughly convincing among the cafes, shop fronts and municipal buildings that line the town’s square. It is unmistakably a Volkswagen when you're standing next to it, with clear similarities to the larger Tiguan. A wheel-at-each corner stance also gives the Taigun a heavy dose of visual confidence for something so compact – an observation that is further enforced by its 17-inch wheels, which with 205/65 tyres help to fill its substantial arches.Nothing is official just yet but signs are the new five door will see production with only subtle changes to exterior styling, a collaboration between Volkswagen’s main design studio in Wolfsburg and its Italian off-shoot Giugiaro.Officials on hand in Argentina this week suggested the grille could be toned down to reflect the more restrained look of other recent Volkswagen models. The same goes for the headlamps. The two-piece tailgate, while providing excellent access to the rear, is also too complex to consider on a car set to compete at the lower end of the market. It is likely to be replaced by a simpler one-piece hatchback style arrangement.A turn behind the wheel of the Tai

2016 Audi TT RS - first spy shots
New generation of hardcore coupé could get new aluminium-block five-cylinder engine producing up to 400bhp This is the Audi TT RS, spied testing in Germany ahead of its arrival in showrooms next year. The TT RS will continue to get a five-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, but it’s still unclear if it will use a breathed-on version of the 2.5-litre unit that already features in the Audi RS3. The motor in the mega-hatch produces 362bhp, but a few extra horses could feasibly be squeezed out of it to increase the gap between the TT RS and the 306bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder TT S.However, it is possible that the TT RS could be the first Audi to get a new generation of the five-cylinder engine, with an aluminium block instead of the current motor’s steel block. Originally used in non-turbocharged form in the US-market VW Jetta, the new engine could produce up to 400bhp and potentially allow Audi to make the RS slightly lighter than the S. The extra performance could help the TT RS to crack 0-62mph in less than four seconds and hit a top speed of 180mph.Regardless of engine, the next TT RS will be four-wheel drive only, although buyers should have a choice of transmission, with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox being offered as an alternative to the standard six-speed manual. The test mule in these shots show how the RS will feature a relatively subtle styling kit, with new bumpers front and rear, deeper air intakes at the front end and oval exhaust pipes. The final production model is likely to get a larger rear spoiler, though.Get the latest car news, reviews and galleries from Autocar direct t

Volkswagen XL1 review
New 313mpg hybrid points the way to making cars cheaper to use The major details of the VW XL1, the German manufacturer's all-composite, 795kg, super-aerodynamic (Cd 0.189), two-door hybrid have been on the record for months. It is a monocoque car, close enough to production for a run of 250 to have been announced, powered both by a two-cylinder, mid-mounted 800cc diesel engine producing 50bhp and an electric motor that adds another 27bhp.The pair drive through a seamless seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Actually, the total clutch count is three – two in the gearbox and another between the engine and motor – to allow the car sometimes to be driven on electric power alone. The XL1’s efficiency is already legendary: in windless conditions it needs just 8bhp to maintain a steady 62mph and it can return up to 313mpg. And yet if you were to deploy all available power it would hit 125mph, although for now it’s governed at 100mph.From a standing start the VW will reach 62mph acceleration in a respectable 12.7sec; indeed, as soon as we start our drive, it becomes clear that the XL1 delivers normal-to-brisk performance.The XL1’s all-up weight of 795kg is impressive, but its aerodynamics are even more staggering. Thanks in part to a frontal area barely two-thirds that of a Polo, its drag factor is half that of equivalent cars. However, airflow management involves more than sleekness. In the XL1’s case, engine bay cooling air is collected from a high-pressure area within the rear diffuser and ducted past the engine, exhausting through two ‘nostrils’ on the car’s upper surface. Most of the time, the flow is enough to keep things cool, but there is an assistance fan (reminiscent of the fan visible in old Beetles) to augment flow on really hot days. Our mission is a pr

Porsche Panamera Turbo review
Porsche's Panamera has had a mid-life refresh, tested here in its most-powerful state yet - the new 513bhp Turbo This is the Panamera with mid-life freshenings, sampled here in its most potent turbocharged form with 513bhp rather than the 493bhp of the outgoing model. This rework sees Porsche’s saloon resculpted at the rear end, receiving new bumpers front and rear as well as some suspension changes designed to smooth out its ride and quell road noise. The big news elsewhere in the range is the launch of a plug-in hybrid version, and the arrival of a new Porsche-designed bi-turbo V6. But it’s the almost preposterously potent Turbo that we’re dealing with here.  This is a car of galactic performance, its 516lb ft of torque and seven gears allowing you to bound down the road at time-crushing pace, and with little more than a flex of your right foot. It dismisses 62mph in just 4.2 seconds, storms to 100mph 8.9sec and 124mph in 13.8sec. That’s mighty performance in anyone’s book. And a finger-jab will access it still more completely; sport or sport plus needing the attentions of your index digit if you’re to penetrate deeper and more swiftly into this Porsche’s torque reserves. These modes sharpen the accelerator and encourage the seven-speed transmission to extract power from higher up the rev range, besides girding the chassis for speedier assaults on the fast-arriving horizon. Going harder is a worthwhile activity on almost any kind of open road, the Porsche impressively agile despite its bulk and heft, its nimbleness through corners heightened by the low centre of gravity that’s central to the concept of this four door, four-seat saloon. On autobahns, this Panamera will confidently run at high-speed-train challenging speeds. Four

SsangYong Turismo review
The Turismo is a big car, but does value equal versatility for SsangYong's Rodius replacement? The SsangYong Turismo is the kind of car to give new meaning to the phrase ‘a lot of metal for the money’. The artist formerly known as ‘Rodius’, this giant seven-seater is MPV, load-lugger and 4x4 all rolled into a package that is seriously cheap.A fully loaded example will cost you less than a high-end VW Golf – and yet it’s longer than most large executive saloons, has the ground clearance to match many medium-sized SUVs, and even comes with a low-range transfer ‘box. An entry-level one will cost you only £18,000.Now under the auspices of Indian car-industry power Mahindra, SsangYong has had a chequered recent corporate history, but its brand identity remains the same: this is Korea’s 4x4 specialist. The Rexton SUV is probably its best-known export in the UK, followed by the smaller Korando, but expansion plans are moving along to launch a similar model in the European ‘Crossover B’ segment to rival the Skoda Yeti and Vauxhall Mokka. It has taken the decision to drop the ‘Rodius’ name for this generation, understandably given that the outgoing car’s styling earned it a reputation as one of the most unfortunate-looking new cars on the road. The new version, however, is something of a dramatic improvement. It is still too large and high-sided a car to ever look attractive, but more conventional window and light treatments now at least make it look normal. The car’s cabin is vast: big enough for two individual chairs in the second row, generously provided with head- and legroom, and a three-seater third-row bench that, even in place, leaves a boot the size of a small estate car’s: 870-litres up to the roof. The seats in the second and third rows are removable, so you c

2016 BMW X2 spotted testing for the first time
Sporty, coupé-like BMW X2 is set to hit the UK in 2017 and share the X1’s underpinnings These are the first spy pictures of the upcoming BMW X2, which will be positioned in between the second-generation X1 and the current X3 in BMW's line-up when it goes on sale in the second half of 2016.Based on the same platform as the X1, the X2 is set to be previewed by a thinly disguised concept car at the Geneva motor show in March of next year.BMW officials have already confirmed to Autocar that the X2 will follow the example of the larger X4 and X6 in receiving a uniquely styled steel body. This first prototype reveals the X2 will be significantly longer and wider than the X1, with a shorter rear overhang and high-set bonnet. The extreme angle of the tailgate is designed to give the X2 a more coupé-like silhouette, differentiating it from the more practical X1.Like the X1, the X2 will initially be offered with a range of four-cylinder engines, with the likelihood of more economical three-cylinder units being added to the line-up within the first 12 months. They will include a powered-up version of BMW’s new B48 engine, which made its debut in the 2 Series Active Tourer, in a planned M Performance variant of the X2 scheduled for launch in 2018. In standard guise, the B48 engine makes 228bhp, although that is set to rise to somewhere in the region of 300bhp with changes to the induction system and other tw

Mercedes-Benz Citan panel van review
Mercedes' first-ever compact van is the sister of the Renault Kangoo, but the Citan offers considerable brand appeal The Mercedes-Benz Citan is the smallest van to wear a three-pointed star, and the first product to be born of Merc’s joint venture with Renault. And if you think the Citan looks strangely familiar, you’re right – under the skin you’ll find a Renault Kangoo. And if that seems a little odd, think of it this way. In 2012, the Kangoo enjoyed a 17.4 per cent share of the market. If you’re going to work with someone, you may as well do it with someone who knows what they’re doing.Mercedes is keen to point out that the Citan isn’t a bit of badge engineering. The suspension, engine and bodywork have been reworked to provide a bit more Mercedes-ness.There is an impressive number of configurations in the range. There are three wheelbases offered in the panel van range with or without fuel-saving BlueEfficiency kit. And there’s a five-seat Traveliner van-derived MPV and a part-van, part-MPV Dualiner which offers up to five seats, plus a large cargo bay. It’s the panel van in BlueEfficiency trim in the mid-length wheelbase that we’re driving here.Impressively refined. And rather car-like, which bodes well for the Traveliner version. Acceleration is perky, although with only a driver and no cargo carried, it ought to be. The five-speed gearbox has a nice positive action, and despite lacking a sixth ratio (that’s reserved for the range-topping 110bhp version), a motorway cruise is possible in relative peace. And although the steering is tuned for ease of use, it is reasonably accurate, if lacking in feel. Better is the turning circle, which measures 12.2m (its just 10.1m for the shortest wheelbase models). The Mercedes-tuned springs and dampers provide

The day our politicians deserted the car industry they claim to love
The SMMT's International Automotive Summit was missing one thing - governmental support Britain’s car manufacturers’ club, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), held its International Automotive Summit yesterday. It has been a much bigger event in the past, but this one boiled down to half a day in London, probably because the organisers suspected the VW scandal would overtake everything. In fact, that subject did come up in the 8.30am pre-summit briefing, although there was a distinct feeling that we’ve entered a period when talking must stop and VW’s various acts of penance must begin – and roll on for years. What was truly shameful, though, was the non-appearance of anything resembling a political leader. These people profess, at other times, to love the British car industry. Without quite saying so, they’d like you to think its achievements this past few years are mainly down to them. But yesterday, despite the suggestion in an early edition of the summit’s running order that an industry minister would show up, there was no one. Fair-weather friends and all that… It was a good event, though, cheerfully fronted by the SMMT’s CEO, Mike Hawes, a definite force for good in tough times since his arrival from Bentley. The other ‘featured artists’ were pretty good, too. The real heavyweight was the BMW board’s tame Brit, Ian Robertson, who gave another of his dazzling presentations, leaving us in no doubt that electric propulsion will be the

Mercedes-AMG GL63 review
The Mercedes GL63 is the powerhouse of the GL range. It's fast and powerful, but a Cayenne Turbo is a better bet The other Mercedes GL. The preposterous one. With a price tag and power output to rival the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and 5.0-litre V8 Range Rover. The GL63 AMG is the Burj Khalifa version of Mercedes’ seven-seat SUV; as applicable to the UK as an 829-metre skyscraper would be to Hounslow - but fascinating nevertheless. For £91,715 (some £30k more than the Mercedes GL350) you get flared wheel arches filled with 21-inch AMG alloys - which in turn are filled with manhole cover-sized AMG brakes - chromed AMG quad tailpipes, AMG sports seats, AMG steering wheel and the roll-nullifying Active Curve Control as standard. Of course what you is really paying for is the generator of 550bhp and 560lb ft of torque up front. The bi-turbo 5.5-litre V8 might not conjure up quite the same misty-eyed affection as the naturally aspirated 6.3-litre found in the C63 AMG, but it’s a mighty unit nevertheless, and specifically intended to handle heavier loads in the Mercedes range. Best to get someone else to start the GL63; that way you can stand out the back and marvel at the wall of sound emerging from its rear end. Don’t expect passers-by to join you in the AMG appreciation society though – unless you’re actually about to drive the thing it probably seems as anti-social as a rocket-powered bus. Drunk from inhaling 288g/km of CO2, the car’s party trick – getting 2580kg from a standing start to 62mph in 4.9sec – is pretty much irresistible right from the get go. Like most of its rivals, the GL63 takes a moment or two to overcome its own inertia, and then surges forward through its first three gears like it were attempting to climb into orbit. Unlike most of

Jaguar C-X75 review
Aborted million-pound Jaguar C-X75 expands the supercar’s brief, sacrificing almost nothing on speed or mind-blowing theatricality The Jaguar C-X75 supercar. Which won’t be finished and won’t be sold. And yet in 2013, the year of the supercar, it was all set to turn the triumvirate confluence of LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder into the most awesome foursome that the car world has ever known. The Jaguar now looks destined to become the forgotten giant, after a decision taken by the company in December 2012 not to put the extended-range petrol-electric two-seater into production after all. The irony is that it might have signalled much more than a million-pound Ferrari or McLaren: newfound ambition for a once world-beating British marque again willing to compete right at the top of the food chain. A marque once again looking to take a guiding hand in the development of the state of the automotive art. Something of a renaissance, in other words.More’s the pity. As things stand, Gaydon’s supercar experiment is over. Five working prototypes exist, and there are no plans to make more. Whispers persist that a few of them may be auctioned, but nothing’s confirmed. Strange circumstances for a first drive – but, in this case, we’ll take ‘em.In supercar terms, the C-X75 moved from apparently fanciful show car to fully operational validation prototype very quickly – and changed quite a lot on route. Those who last read about this car after its unveiling as a concept at the Paris motor show of 2010 will be wondering where its tiny jet turbine power generators have gone. Somewhere along the line, Jaguar concluded – just as Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche did – that the supercar isn’t quite ready to part with reciprocating pistons just yet. What was decided, in

2016 Ford Focus RS - 1500 orders taken for 165mph hot hatch
More than 1500 deposits have been taken for the all-wheel-drive Ford Focus RS, powered by a 2.3-litre engine producing 345bhp and 324lb ft Ford has already received 1500 orders from UK buyers for the new Ford Focus RS in anticipation of first deliveries of the hot hatch in spring 2016.One third of the customer’s deposits were placed before prices and specifications were announced at September’s Frankfurt motor show, and interest has accelerated since the car’s base price of £28,940 was revealed. Many of those ordering the 165mph car are owners of previous RS models, explained Andy Barratt, Ford of Britain chairman and managing director.“These enthusiasts are taking great care in building their optimum specification,” he said. “We expected those first in the queue to be exacting about their requirements, and so it has proved, with many opting for motorsport-style Recaro shell front seats, 19in black forged alloy wheels, Luxury pack, electric tilt/side sunroof and Ford SYNC2 navigation and sound system.”Selecting most of these options pushes the transaction price of the Focus RS north of £30,000. The Recaro shell seats cost £1145 and a set of the 19in black wheels are £595. The Luxury pack, which includes folding door mirrors, rear parking sensors, keyless entry, cruise control and privacy glass, comes in at £1000 and the electric tilt/side sunroof is £575.Ford Focus RS development videosThe third in the series of videos charting the development of the new Ford Focus RS has been released. Wild Mitsubishi Emirai concept confirmed for Tokyo motor show
Open-topped Mitsubishi Emirai 3 xDas showcases technology that allows the car to react to the driver's mood This is the Mitsubishi Emirai 3 xDas, a Tokyo motor show concept that showcases the firm’s plans for future driving assistance technology.Mitsubishi says its guiding theme has been “making feelings come true”, which hints at its goal of creating a car that can automatically react to the driver’s requirements with minimal inputs.Inside, the cabin features distinctive LCD displays that are laminated and bonded to allow for ease of visibility and operation in all conditions. The displays sit on either side of the driver and are fully customisable. All cabin operations can be controlled through hand motions rather than physical contact with buttons and dials, while the driver also has the option of putting on a wearable device that vibrates to alert them to any hazards or changes in the car’s set-up.The Emirai 3 xDas also has a head-up display that highlights potential hazards up the road and can switch to warn of dangers ahead, including around corners at junctions. It uses 3D mapping to display the information.A camera points at the driver at all times, monitoring the facial expression, and links that information to a cardiograph, before varying the car’s responses accordingly. This information is also automatically analysed against historical data of the driver’s physical condition in order to advise on rest stops. In addition, the system records data on hazard hotspots for sharing to other drivers.

Former Skoda boss Winfried Vahland to leave VW Group
The former boss of Skoda and newly appointed head of Volkswagen in the US, Winfried Vahland, is to step down over differences in strategy Skoda has confirmed that the Volkswagen Group’s new US-market chief, Winfried Vahland, is leaving the company less than two weeks after being appointed to his new role.Vahland, who was CEO of Skoda until a fortnight ago, has had extensive experience in China and had been tipped as a future VW Group CEO candidate. He was put in charge of VW’s new North American division as part of the management restructure that brought in Matthias Müller to replace Martin Winterkorn as group boss. However, differences over the new US-market strategy announced yesterday - including a switch to diesel motors using SCR and AdBlue technology - have prompted Vahland to leave the company. In a statement, Skoda said Vahland was leaving the company at his own request and would not be taking up his US-based position, while also confirming that "this decision is expressly not related to current events on the issue of diesel engines."Vahland started with the Volkswagen Group in 1990, rising to become boss of VW in China in 2005. He became boss of Skoda in 2010. "In the last 25 years, Prof. Vahland made a great contribution to the company," said Müller "We respect his decision and thank him for his exceptional performance."Wider political forces within the VW Group management may also have influenced his decision; Vahland is said to have been the preferred VW Group CEO candidate of Winterkorn

Aston Martin Rapide Shooting Brake Bertone Jet 2+2 review
We test the one-off V12-engined Aston Martin Rapide Shooting Brake Bertone Jet 2+2 At the moment, the Aston Martin Rapide Shooting Brake – or the Jet 2+2 as it is officially entitled – is merely a one-off design project that Bertone has created for one of its wealthier customers; a chap who likes his Aston Martins and who goes by the name of Mr Barry Weir. However, so taken with the car are the folks at Aston Martin that, rumour has it, they are now seriously considering making a small but perfectly formed production run.If that run is less than 10, then the cars will be made by Bertone. But if it’s more than 10, Aston will build them instead, at Gaydon, probably (not that anyone from Aston will confirm or deny any plans for such a model as it stands…).Either way, from the moment you set eyes on the Shooting Brake Rapide, you just know that its styling is right. It looks so natural, in fact, that it’s a wonder Aston Martin didn’t come up with the idea in-house.Putting a price on such a one-off car is hard if not impossible to do, but at a guess you’d have to think that the Aston Martin is worth at least £1.5m, possibly more.Beneath its elegantly stretched lines the Shooting Brake is “about 70 per cent Rapide” according to its chief designer, ex-Rover man and a very proud Britain who works abroad, Adrian Griffiths. That means, effectively, that it uses the previous generation's 470bhp V12 and the same rear wheel-drive chassis as the regular Rapide. Mechanically, in other words, it is pure Rapide.“We basically had to take the car apart and then put most of it back together again” admits Griffiths.“But we realised early on that we had to lift the rear haunches substantially because the whole car was sitting too low at the back. I’m extremely

Hyundai i30 N hot hatch - latest spy pictures
More Nurburgring testing for the Korean rival to the Ford Focus ST and VW Golf GTI; spy pics show a subtle bodykit These are the latest spy images of the Hyundai i30 N, a sporty version of the family hatchback that will be used to kick-start the Korean manufacturer's new N performance division.Test mules of the hot i30 have been seen regularly around the Nurburgring through the summer. The prototypes show that the i30 N will have lowered suspension, a rear spoiler mounted at the top of the hatchback glass and larger alloy wheels than the regular model. It appears to have a subtle bodykit at best, though, with little extra flaring in the wheelarches. This indicates that Hyundai is aiming for the more mainstream end of the hot hatchback market - a rival for the VW Golf GTI or the Ford Focus ST instead of the Golf R, Civic Type R or Focus RS.Through the windscreen it is possible to see additional round instruments on the top of the dashboard. These could be to display the boost pressure of the turbocharged engine. At the recent Frankfurt motor show, Hyundai's N division boss Albert Biermann told Autocar that the sub-brand's cars would be capable of use at track days, thanks to improved cooling, uprated brakes and more robust suspension components. "We want these N cars to be affordable high-performance," he said. "It will be the wild end of the brand."Hyundai’s World Rally Championship boss, Michel Nandan, has previously stated that that the i30 will spearhead the

Do easily repairable cars make better buys?
Does the ease with which a car can be fixed sway your buying decision? Potentially, it should Before you buy a used car, what is it you really need to know? I mean, we do try our best at Autocar and tell you what tyres to kick, which things to tap and what you ought to be worrying about. The thing is, that’s not really enough. Mostly, ‘what to look fors’ can be very deceiving. What we need is a book. No, let’s be modern: an interweb site. Nope, that won’t do, either. These days it has to be an app - an app that rates a used car’s repairability. Because we really do need to know whether the car we are about to buy is not just easy to live with but also to fix.Of course, you can just throw money at a problem, but that can prove to be ruinously expensive. I mean, all we need is a graphic of little spanners to explain the level of difficulty of, say, changing a battery.I’ll use the battery as an example, because of an email I received from an Autocar reader on an unrelated subject. His 2002 Porsche Boxster requires something of a procedure to get access to the battery. That’s because the genius designers at Porsche imprisoned the battery behind an electronically actuated boot release. Apparently the factory fix if your Boxster won’t start is to attach some jump leads to the fuse box in the passenger compartment. But that doesn’t work if the battery is as flat as a pancake. The next battery crisis involved a mate and his Ford S-Max on holiday. 2015 Lexus GS F review
A fine chassis, engine and ownership proposition – but still more curio than credible alternative The Lexus GS F is a car that’s been on the starting blocks for several years. Lexus’s F-brand performance division was ready to launch it back in 2010, using the third-generation GS as a basis – only for global financial conditions to be deemed too hostile. So it’s with a strong sense of relief that the Japanese firm is now finally getting ready to put its first full-size super-saloon into showrooms and slide another feather into the band of its cap.Like the IS F, LF A and RC F before it, the GS F is an unconventional kind of performance machine that speaks volumes about Lexus’s alternative approach. If it were built by a German carmaker’s performance division it’d be more powerful, more expensive and turbocharged. All three facts would be inevitable in order to earn the car a place in the ever-escalating horsepower race that has defined Germany’s market for ’bahn-storming four-doors this past decade or so.“We choose not to get involved in a fight we can’t win,” says chief engineer for the car Yukihiko Yaguchi. So instead of focusing on power and outright sledgehammer pace, Lexus counters with noise, excitement and ‘performance feel’. Its 471bhp 5.0-litre atmospheric V8 engine is the main conduit of all three, with a building torque delivery quite unlike the walloping mid-range of the turbo V8s now common in the niche.Away from the engine compartment, Lexus has gone to rare lengths to give the GS F the tools it needs to take on the might of Bavaria.New joining techniques, alongside bracing of the car’s body-in-white, add about 10% to the static torsional stiffness of the GS’s monocoqu
