The Met is getting to grips with racism The Metropolitan Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe, says in an interview with this paper today, that “I hope we are always shocked by a police officer being a racist”. He is right. He says that, notwithstanding the Met’s referral of 10 cases of alleged racism to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, the number of these cases is proportionately very small. But one case is, as he says, one too many, as he must make clear to the Commons Home Affairs Select Committe on Tuesday.
Mitt won the race — but can he win over his party? The same dramatic week that saw George Zimmerman arrested and charged with the murder of Trayvon Martin brought freedom for Mitt Romney. His chief remaining rival in the Republican race, Rick Santorum, fighting back tears, suspended his campaign.
Both wings of the church don’t want me God help the next Archbishop of Canterbury. A Church of England vicar in Croydon this week persuaded half his congregation to join a Catholic order 500 yards up the road, explaining to his parishioners that the Anglican church was telling traditional worshippers to “bugger off”. London evening papers led the way with Titanic reporting The sinking of the Titanic gets saturation coverage this weekend - Sunday is the centenary of the sinking; fittingly, for it was the first ever global media event. It set the news pattern for every subsequent disaster up to and including 9/11. The newly-created Marconi telegraph system meant that reports of the calamity could be flashed around the world in hours if not minutes. With passengers from all over England and the United States, from a dozen European countries, from Armenia, the Lebanon, China, Japan, Australia there had never been an incident that mattered in so many places or to so many nationalities and covered by so many newspapers in so many languages.
London is a different country — it needs bigger thinking The mayoral race is certainly entertaining but I wonder whether the contenders have really come to terms with the big picture, which is that London is now effectively not so much part of Britain as a city state in its own right. In fact it’s so different to the rest of the UK that it’s almost like living in another country, though visitors to London mistakenly assume that they’ve arrived in the heartland of England. London is different, and that has big implications for the way the city is run, because national politicians don’t always seem to understand the huge challenges that are unique to our city.
