THE Mayor, Boris Johnson, has warned the Government about the damage that a “mansion tax”, as championed by the Liberal Democrats, would do to London. He is right: an outright, percentage-based tax on properties worth £2?million-plus, which Business Secretary Vince Cable favours, would be, as Mr Johnson says, “a tax on living in London”. Many homes in Kensington, Chelsea and Westminster which would by no means count as grand in other parts of the country would be affected.
